How We Increased Survey Response Rates by 166%


Surveys are one of the most widely used tools to help organizers gauge attendee reactions before, during, and after an event. Event teams rely heavily on surveys to quantify the success of their event and receive qualitative feedback on how to improve their content year over year.

While surveys are by no means a new innovation, they have evolved over time from pen and paper, to web-based, and in recent years, onto mobile via mobile event apps, the most convenient way to reach attendees. In fact, according to a recent study from MPI, using an event app to survey attendees can increase response rates by up to 103%. But while this improvement is significant, survey response and completion rates remain a sticking point for many event organizers.

To solve this problem, we decided to look for a way to make responding to surveys more convenient and more efficient. Based on usage data captured at thousands of events, we know that attendees using a DoubleDutch event app spend most of their time browsing the Activity Feed in the app, so we knew this was the best place to reach them. Bearing this in mind, we designed a new feature that puts a reminder in the Activity Feed, prompting attendees to complete relevant surveys over the course of the event.

How does it work?

Our new Session Surveys Card checks to see which sessions an attendee has added to their personal agenda in the app. After these sessions are over, any surveys that are linked to these sessions will appear at the top of the Activity Feed. Attendees can also see at a glance how many points they can earn in the app by completing each survey, providing an incentive to respond. Once a survey has been completed, the reminder will automatically be removed from the activity feed.

Since this feature was released, it has been implemented at over 50 events, and has already had a dramatic effect on survey response rates. As we hoped, showing relevant content to attendees has led to high engagement, with 63% of users that see this reminder tapping through on the card in the feed.

This high engagement rate has led to a significant increase in survey responses — events using this feature on average see 166% more attendees taking surveys than events that did not use this feature.

This feature is available in the Double Dutch event app v5.5 and above. It requires no additional setup — if your app contains surveys that are linked to sessions, then your attendees will be able to see these reminders in the feed automatically.
